SUMMARY COMMENTS ON THE SESSION
(Brief description of the session and a brief account of the main strengths and weaknesses)

This was a seminar class exploring the social construction of gender, and feminism and sociology.

The session was well structured using group work, powerpoint, visual imagery and general discussion. Questions were set to guide the discussion and Delaram attempted to translate, interpreting and synthesise student responses to move them towards the broader themes of the subject matter. Delaram’s delivery demonstrated a clear understanding of the topic. Her use of visuals in particular was thought provoking and a good tool to stimulate debate and discussion. The different tools Delaram used to provoke discussion at a number of different levels also impressed me.

There were a few noteworthy issues however which deserve some discussion here.  Firstly, none of the students had done the reading complaining that there were not enough ‘online’ and downloadable resources.  Delaram explained that this debilitates discussion and stressed they were responsible for their own reading/learning but of course this is a difficult starting point for any tutor.  I would suggest she that insists firmly that students read in future sessions, allowing for no excuses.  Secondly, some of the discussion descended into students expressing their personal ‘opinions’ about gender rather than a sociological viewpoint.  Again, this is not unusual at Year 1, but something that needs to be managed carefully.  Here, one student became offended, thinking others were criticising her ‘opinion’.  This generated some conflict within the group.  Delaram managed this situation well, explaining the difference between opinion and scholarly engagement and moving the discussion on but unfortunately the student continued to take offence for a while.  This is a difficult situation for any tutor to manage and Delaram demonstrated competence however I would suggest that she integrates into her teaching a session about opinion and engagement to avoid this in the future.

Overall, this was a good session and despite the difficulties (presented by students) Delaram’s teaching style was both informed and  informing.
